ANN DEMEULEMEESTER

The veiled elegant poetry of Ann Demeulemeester, belgian designer, is made of minimalistic goth-style but also of an unespected romance and bohemienne soul.

Ann is passioned about art and she studied at Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts, from which prodigious designer Martin Margiela went from. In the excitement of the Academy, Ann become part of group of young talented creatives later called “Anterp six” together with Dries Van Noten, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dirk Van Saene e Marina Yee. Thanks to this partnership and collaboration the group participate to the British Design Show, a sort of fashion exhibition. Press goes crazy reffering to them as the “Young Savages”, the ones who revolutionized the fashion system with an unconventional and deconstructed heartquake coming from Antwerp.

In 1985 she founded with Patrick Robyn, her husband and photographer, her brand Ann Demeulemeester showing her first collection in Paris 1992. In few time, the dark-romantic style brand reached an international success, extending the business to the men’s ready to wear in 1996 and to the shoes in 1999, when the first Antwerp boutique inaugurated. Demeulemeester’s signature become more and more recognizable in her strong identity. Each Ann Demeulemeester collection is characterized by Androgynous shapes and unfinished cuts, enriched by layers with boots and bags which complete the look. Wool, silk and leather are the prevalent natural fabrics. In 2014 with an handwriting delicate and emotional letter Ann left the creative direction of the Maison which has been given to Sebastien Manier, who maintained the brand DNA for all its permanence.

In 2020 Claudio Antonioli, Ann’s good friend, bought the group to celebrate a new beginning and the thirty years of Ann Demeulemeester carrier. In this scenario Ann and her husband came back to fashion but remaining behind the scene: the founder and designer doesn’t resume her creative director’s role, now assigned to a creative team, but she is a creative consultant and responsible of the global brand image. Patrick Roby, instead, takes care of the worldwide boutiques’ furniture, including the Antwerp’s one which Claudio Antonioli restored.
